Personal Statement
I want to study fine art because I would like to have the freedom to explore ideas and issues using a range of media and processes. Fine art is a subject that places a lot of emphasis on working independently, and I feel I am a person with a strong sense of identity, who would be able to make decisions and develop a practice that is personal and distinctive. I am looking for a broad-based course that will allow me to pursue ideas without restrictions on media. I would like to have the opportunity to take my ideas into areas like printmaking, photography, painting, but I would also like to consider things like installation and film that I haven’t yet had the opportunity to explore in depth.
One of the processes I have found particularly interesting so far is printmaking, because there is something very intriguing about the balance between control and accident. I have made a series of text pieces, based on a collection of beetles in the local museum, exploring the paradox of making monochrome prints from vibrantly coloured specimens, and also making a text piece rather than drawing the actual beetles. Although it might not be immediately obvious, this piece was about emotional reactions. The art that inspires me deals with strong emotions, particularly art that has a confessional element. It is this aspect of Tracey Emin’s work that makes her an inspirational figure. On the other hand, what I take from Robert Rauschenberg is the aesthetics of his prints, sculptures and paintings: the way that he can take a collection of seemingly random images and make sense of them. When I first look at the prints and paintings it looks like he has scattered images and paint marks across the surface. But, looking more closely, I can see the care with which he has composed his pictures organising these diverse elements – image of a street, a close-up of an unrelated figure, etc. – into a coherent whole. I am similarly interested in putting together contrasting elements and making them ‘work’ as a coherent image.
I am enjoying my foundation course. I decided to stay on the course for a further year as I wanted to develop my skills further and ensure that I make the most of my degree course. One of the things I have enjoyed most about the foundation programme has been the visiting lecturers, particularly Sean Dower form UAL. His enthusiasm was infectious and I was impressed by the extent to which he could make art out of simple things and out of the experiences he had had while travelling. His enthusiasm and inventiveness are an inspiration, and it made me keener to pursue my ambition to travel widely once I have completed my education.
