                (Liverpool Tate Trip- 19th Sept)

Jamie talked about a project- experimental drawing (part 1). Then went to Blackburn Museum in the afternoon.

Influences/connections to artworks at Blackburn Museum-  emotional connections / visual connections through photography, video and film, drawing, music, etc. Write down ideas in journal for the project- have an idea at the end of the day.

Paintings that appealed to me because of texture-

'End of the Butterfly Chase' by Edward Hornel

'Alto Rhapsody' by Ronald William Web

'selection of paintings done to the music of Kathleen Ferrier.'

The idea of making Indian-style jewelry appeals to me because of the meaning, style and colour-

'Indian Gujerat' -heavy jewelry equals wealth

'Amulet Necklace'- Silver shapes are believed to protect the bearer from evil

Victorian Curio featuring two panels of mounted insects and butterflies, 1870's. Such exotic objects were very popular with the Victorian middle class.

                                        Insect cabinet images:

The insects and butterflies attracted me because of the colour and the range of shapes and sizes. I also like the variety of colours; from fairly bleached, dusty colours to dark and powerful pigments.

After looking at the Curio and the beetles, it gave me an idea to use a mixture of textiles and real insects and butterflies. I then went downstairs and took photographs of stuffed birds in organic surroundings to get more ideas of colours and textures I could use.

The last piece of inspiration I had was when I visited the 'Egypt Room'. The idea of preserving and keeping the memory of something appealed to me and the expansive use of clay and ceramics gave me the idea of putting insects that would be otherwise over-looked, into clay to preserve them. This would then hopefully finalise into a 3D clay piece.

After having an initial idea that I am happy with, I plan to do research into clay pieces similar to the idea I have, looking at different artists and possibly types of insects, butterflies and organic surroundings.
